Some of the best local food stories begin with something simple: a family recipe, a familiar flavour and the desire to bring a little piece of home somewhere new.

Sonora MX Taqueria is owned by Karla and Raul, originally from Esperanza in Sonora, Mexico. Raul grew up around the restaurant business—his grandfather owned a restaurant for more than 40 years—and after moving to Canada in 2017, the couple set out to bring the flavours of northern Mexico to Ladner.

The Mood

Casual, colourful and easygoing.

This is the kind of place that works when you want a quick taco lunch, an uncomplicated family meal or a table full of different dishes to share.

The restaurant describes itself as a small, family-run taqueria, and that relaxed format makes it especially approachable with kids.

What to Order

For a first visit, The Weekender would start with a taco trio.

Try the Carne Asada with grilled steak, cabbage and pico de gallo, add a Chicken Tinga with chipotle chicken, then make the third a Baja Fish Taco with crunchy cabbage, chipotle mayo and pico.

Coming hungry? The current menu also includes quesabirrias, burritos, tortas, fajitas, enchiladas and larger Sonora plates.

Add a horchata alongside the tacos—and if you still have room, finish with a churro.

Before You Go

Bringing the kids? Sonora MX is an easy casual option, particularly if everyone wants something different. Individual tacos make it simple to mix and match, while quesadillas, rice, fries and churros offer more familiar choices.

Bringing your dog? Check first. Outdoor seating is listed, but I could not find a current statement from Sonora MX confirming that dogs are permitted on the patio.
