Ukuleles, puzzle cubes and a programmable robot are among the things you can take home with an FVRL library card.
Before buying something new to keep the kids busy, check the library catalogue.
Fraser Valley Regional Library’s The Playground collection lets families borrow equipment and activity kits for free. It’s a useful way to try something your child has been asking about before spending money on it.
Here are three options worth looking up for a rainy weekend.
What Can You Borrow?
A ukulele
For the child who wants to learn an instrument, borrowing one gives them a chance to try. Start with a few chords and see how they get on.
Puzzle cubes
A good option for kids who enjoy figuring things out with their hands. Work through one together or take turns trying to solve it.
A Sphero BOLT robot
This programmable rolling robot lets children try coding and create their own games. Set up a simple course at home and see whether they can guide it around the obstacles.
Not every item will be available right away. Check the catalogue and place a hold before planning your afternoon.
How to Borrow
You’ll need a full-access FVRL library card.
Open The Playground page.
Choose an item and follow its availability link.
Place a hold through the catalogue.
Select your preferred pickup branch.
Wait for confirmation that your item is ready before heading over.
FVRL can deliver holds to your nearest branch, so you don’t need to travel to the location that owns the item.
Where Can Delta Families Pick Up?
Choose the branch that works best for you:
How Long Can You Keep It?
FVRL lists a three-week loan period for Playground items, reduced to two weeks when others are waiting.
Check your checkout receipt for the due date. Return the equipment to a library service desk rather than putting it in the book return.
Don’t Have a Library Card?
Library membership is free for Delta residents.
Adults registering in person should bring ID showing their current mailing address. For children aged 12 and under, FVRL asks for the child’s ID and proof of the parent or guardian’s address.
The Weekender Tip
Order ahead if you have a particular weekend in mind, and wait for your pickup notice before telling the kids what’s planned. Popular items may have a waitlist.
When you collect your kit, ask staff about getting started and checking that all the pieces are there before you take it home.
